PETALING JAYA: Two days after devastating floods struck Nepal, families in Malaysia are still waiting anxiously for news of loved ones who remain uncontactable.
Subramaniam Murugaya said his father-in-law, Krishnan Vadivelu, who was on a pilgrimage, remained uncontactable.
“There were zero details. We don’t know whether he has survived,” Subramaniam said when contacted.
“We have spoken to the Foreign Ministry, but there aren’t many updates from them and the Nepal side.”
He said families of the missing Malaysians are planning to hold a press conference on the matter.
Dharaniya Rajan, who lost contact with her mother S. Gomathi, called for answers from the Nepalese government.
“Why have we still not received clear official information regarding the devastating floods and the Malaysians who remain unaccounted for?” she said in a social media post.
“Families in Malaysia are desperately waiting for answers. At the same time, many Malaysians are willing to travel and volunteer to assist with search and rescue efforts. If additional manpower is needed, please tell us how we can help through the proper channels.”
Another user, Divya Varshini Krishnan, whose father Brabaakaran Krishnan, 47, was travelling with a pilgrimage group, echoed Dharaniya’s concerns.
“We urgently need clarity regarding the reported origin of this flood from the Tibet-China side.
“What exactly happened upstream in Tibet? What caused this sudden and devastating flood? Was it related to a glacial or ice-related event, and has this been officially confirmed?
“What search and rescue operations are being carried out on the China/Tibet side? Why is there so little official information publicly available?” she posted.
