GEORGE TOWN: Penang ferry services will be free for Malaysian passengers on Aug 31 in conjunction with the 69th National Day celebrations, Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said.
He said the initiative, carried out in collaboration with Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), would follow the existing service schedule at both ferry terminals - Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal (PSAH) in Seberang Perai and Raja Tun Uda Terminal (PRTU) here.
"This initiative reflects SPPP and PPSB’s continued commitment to making travel more convenient for Malaysians. The free ferry service is not only aimed at easing traffic congestion in Penang, but also encouraging the use of more sustainable and efficient public transport,” he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 28).
He said based on statistics for two-way ferry journeys during last year’s National Day celebrations, 9,185 pedestrians and 1,874 two-wheeled vehicles used the service.
Yeoh said under the free ferry initiative, passengers would save RM2 per one-way journey for pedestrians and RM2.50 for two-wheeled vehicles.
In conjunction with the free ferry initiative and SPPP’s 70th anniversary (Platinum Jubilee) this year, he said SPPP was also partnering with the Penang Ferry Museum to run the ‘Kids Go Free Merdeka Special’ campaign.
"The programme allows Malaysian children aged 12 and below to enjoy free admission to the ferry museum from Aug 29 to 31, 2026,” he said. - Bernama
