PUTRAJAYA: A former Tabung Haji chairman and a former Treasury secretary-general have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to assist investigations linked to the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the pilgrimage fund.
The two men, both in their 60s, were arrested at about 4pm yesterday when they arrived at the MACC headquarters here.
They are expected to be brought before the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court today for a remand application.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman confirmed the arrests.
The investigation follows issues highlighted in the RCI report involving Tabung Haji.
On Aug 8, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had decreed that investigations into the RCI’s findings on Tabung Haji be conducted comprehensively and transparently.
Apart from investigations by enforcement authorities, Parliament’s bipartisan Public Accounts Committee (PAC) unanimously agreed yesterday to begin proceedings to investigate governance, financial and investment weaknesses at Tabung Haji.
The RCI report was made public on July 29 and subsequently debated in Parliament on Aug 11 during a special sitting.
