A hidden gem in Banggi

IT is hidden and not known by many as a place of interest, but it holds much potential to be explored as an ecotourism site and for adventure activities.

This lesser-known gem is Monsud Cave on Banggi Island in Kudat. The cave, believed by some local folk to house spiritual entities, has unique rock formations, flora and fauna, and is home to thousands of bats.

This was experienced by a group of 16 people comprising youths, civil servants and members of the local community who took up the challenge of exploring the cave as part of their Jelajah Merdeka (Merdeka Tour) programme.

Their representative, Azry Hussin, said they chose the lesser-known site because there were certain challenges they were interested in overcoming.

“For starters, we had to walk for six to eight hours across hilly terrain before reaching the cave. We also had to pass through forests, streams and a river along the way,” he said.

He said that before trekking to the cave, their guide briefed them on local customs to observe, including not spitting, being mindful of how they speak and what they say, and asking for permission before entering the cave.

“These customs have to be respected because the locals believe there are spirit guardians of the cave and thus there are restrictions or taboos that we have to be aware of,” Azry said, adding that respecting a place and its local customs was not unusual in Sabah.

He said carrying out such a programme was the group’s way of overcoming challenges while encouraging locals to explore unique places with well-preserved nature.

“It was not easy getting to Monsud Cave but the experience we gained was invaluable, especially for youngsters to get to know more about the nature on Banggi Island,” he said.

Azry said such activities also foster bonds, instil a spirit of togetherness and build friendships among participants.

Upon successfully completing the programme, he thanked Banggi assemblyman Datuk Mohammad Mohammarin for his support and assistance.

“We hope to hold more such programmes and at the same time promote Banggi Island and its natural wonders to Sabahans, as well as visitors from outside the state,” he said.
