PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry is strengthening surveillance of haze-related illnesses at health facilities following 10 stations recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, with nine in Sarawak and one in Selangor.
In a statement on Wednesday (Aug 12), the ministry said the preparedness of health facilities, medicine supplies and healthcare personnel had also been stepped up to ensure health services could be provided appropriately should there be an increase in haze-related cases.
According to the ministry, based on the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) at 9am Tuesday (Aug 11), the nine areas in Sarawak recording unhealthy API readings were Serian, Samarahan, Kuching, Bintulu, Samalaju, Mukah, Sibu, Sarikei and Sri Aman, while the other area was Johan Setia in Selangor.
The Health Ministry advised the public, particularly those in affected areas, to reduce physical and strenuous outdoor activities when the API exceeds 100 and to wear an appropriate face mask if they needed to be outdoors.
Educational institutions, government agencies and the private sector were also advised to monitor API readings and adjust outdoor activities according to the air quality level.
"Outdoor sports, co-curricular and strenuous physical activities are advised to be postponed or moved indoors to suitable premises when the API exceeds 100," the statement said.
The public was also advised to keep windows and doors closed to reduce the entry of polluted air, drink sufficient water and pay special attention to children, the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses.
The Health Ministry also reminded the public not to carry out open burning, which could worsen air quality and increase health risks caused by haze.- Bernama
