PETALING JAYA: Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Psychology by the University of Reading in recognition of her longstanding commitment to education and public service.

The honorary degree was presented during the university's graduation ceremony held at a hotel in Johor Baru on Saturday (Aug 1).

In a press release on Tuesday (Aug 4), the University of Reading said the award reflects Her Majesty's enduring belief in education as a powerful driver of positive social change.

“Throughout decades of public life, Her Majesty has championed educational opportunity, literacy, language learning and the empowerment of young people,” it read.

During her address, Her Majesty described education as a force that shapes both knowledge and character.

She emphasised that universities must equip graduates with technical skills while also cultivating judgement, moral values, empathy and compassion.

Highlighting the growing relevance of psychology, Her Majesty also said a deeper understanding of human behaviour, motivation, resilience and relationships is essential in addressing mental health challenges and fostering stronger, more harmonious communities.

She also reminded graduates that education should broaden both the mind and the heart, and that knowledge should ultimately be used in service of society.

“As you embark on the next chapter of your lives, remember that your achievements are not defined solely by the qualifications you hold, but by the impact you have on those around you,” Her Majesty said.

The conferment took place during the university’s centenary year, marking 100 years since it was granted its Royal Charter in 1926.

In his speech, University of Reading vice-chancellor Prof Robert Van de Noort CBE said the occasion reflected the remarkable progress of the university's Malaysia campus and its academic community.

“That we are able to celebrate both milestones together, in the presence of Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah, makes today an occasion we shall not forget.

It is a profound privilege to be conferring an Honorary Doctorate upon Her Majesty at this ceremony, and a fitting tribute to her extraordinary commitment to education and service,” he said.
