SEREMBAN: Nearly half of the complaints submitted through the Barisan Nasional candidate’s “Suara Nilai” community platform centred on environmental cleanliness, road conditions and faulty street lighting.
Barisan candidate Datuk Alan Lai said the findings would shape his priorities should he win the Nilai state seat on Saturday (Aug 1).
He said data showed that more than 47% of feedback from residents through the app related to those three issues, making them the constituency’s most pressing concerns.
He said the findings would form the basis of a “Brighten Up Nilai” 100-day action plan to tackle immediate local issues if he is elected as the Nilai assemblyman.
“Rather than being drawn into political mudslinging, I believe in letting real data tell us where the real problems are.
“People are not interested in politicians blaming one another.
“They want to know whether the streetlights outside their homes work, whether the roads are safe to drive on, and when flash floods will finally be resolved,” he said in a statement on Friday (July 31).
Among the measures proposed in the action plan are a constituency-wide audit and repair programme for damaged streetlights, the formation of a mobile community service team to address flash flood hotspots and unresolved local issues and the upgrading of the “Suara Nilai” platform into a one-stop digital complaints and service network.
Lai also pledged to introduce a free tuition programme for students from underprivileged families and to propose measures to ease traffic congestion and parking shortages in the Nilai and Mantin commercial areas.
Looking beyond the first 100 days, Lai outlined five long-term priorities centred on economic growth, healthcare, infrastructure, education and public service delivery.
On the economy, he said he would leverage Nilai’s proximity to the Sepang International Circuit to attract more visitors and create opportunities for restaurants, homestays, retailers and other local businesses, while strengthening the township’s university-driven economy to generate higher-quality jobs.
He also pledged to improve healthcare services, including pursuing a “One Constituency, One Ambulance” initiative, while seeking long-term solutions to flash floods and deteriorating roads, alongside upgrades to markets, parks and recreational facilities.
In education, Lai said he would promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and artificial intelligence-related learning to help young people secure better-paying jobs or pursue entrepreneurship without leaving Nilai.
He also pledged to establish a more responsive one-stop community service team to ensure complaints receive timely follow-up.
In addition, Lai said he would advocate dedicated rest stations for food delivery riders, improve heavy vehicle traffic management in industrial areas, provide skills training for lower-income households, and assist Mantin fruit growers in securing agricultural grants while promoting the area’s durian industry.
He also pledged to ensure the implementation of all 88 people-centric initiatives contained in the Barisan’s Negri Sembilan manifesto in Nilai.
According to him, this would include a five-year exemption on hawker licence fees, no increase in assessment rates for five years, incentives of up to RM5,000 for university students achieving academic excellence, and RM1,000 in financial assistance for newly married couples.
