PETALING JAYA: Police have temporarily placed 113 refugees under security monitoring at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters after they were transferred there on Monday (July 27) night for documentation and verification.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the group, accompanied by representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was moved to the police headquarters at about 8.50pm.
The group comprised one Iraqi man, one Somali woman, one Indonesian woman who is married to a Rohingya man, as well as 110 Rohingya refugees.
Among the Rohingya were 36 adult men, 21 adult women, 31 boys and 22 girls.
Fadil said officers from the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department, Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, and Internal Security and Public Order Department, together with UNHCR representatives, carried out documentation procedures on the refugees.
"The documentation process conducted on the Rohingya refugees at Dataran Wira, IPK Kuala Lumpur, found that all of them possessed valid UNHCR documents," Fadil said in a statement on Tuesday (July 28).
He added that the refugees were being housed temporarily at Dataran Wira within the police headquarters while UNHCR undertakes further action concerning the community.
On Monday, a group of Rohingya refugees gathered outside the UNHCR office along Jalan Bukit Petaling after being displaced from their settlement in Penang.
The Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Immigration Department (JIM WPKL) said 110 Rohingya refugees had gathered outside the UNHCR office, noting that the enforcement operation was carried out jointly with the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters.
