KUALA LUMPUR: A man has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in an attempted robbery of a security van and the theft of a firearm in front of a bank in Bukit Tinggi, Klang, on Monday (July 20).
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the local suspect, in his 20s, was arrested in Shah Alam, Selangor, at 11am Thursday (July 23).
He said that in the July 20 incident, the suspect is believed to have attempted to rob a security company vehicle carrying cash before snatching a "pump gun" belonging to a security guard and fleeing on a motorcycle.
“Also seized was an Ekol Lite starter pistol together with 48 blank rounds,” he said in a statement Thursday night.
Comm Kumar said checks found that the suspect had one previous criminal offence under Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960.
He said the case is being investigated under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
The suspect is also being investigated under Section 4 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries life imprisonment and whipping of not less than six strokes.
“An application to remand the suspect under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be made in court tomorrow,” he said. — Bernama
