12 locals nabbed in morning ‘footbrawl’

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested 12 people in connection with an early morning brawl, believed to occur during the screening of the FIFA World Cup final at a restaurant here.

State police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said police received information about the fight at a restaurant in Taman Daya at about 5.40am yesterday.

“Following this, we detained 12 local men between 10am and 11am in Taman Setia Indah.

“The suspects are aged between 15 and 38,” he said in a statement.

Comm Ab Rahaman said background checks found three of the suspects have criminal records.

“The motive behind the incident is still under investigation.

“We urge the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could jeopardise the probe,” he said, adding that an application for a remand order will be made today.

He said the case will be investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting while armed with a weapon. If convicted, the offenders face up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine or both.
