Be careful when using AI to generate national flag images, says Fahmi


IPOH: Malaysians have been urged to exercise caution when using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate images or content featuring the Jalur Gemilang to ensure there are no inaccuracies, particularly involving the national flag’s 14 stripes.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the public should take the time to understand the proper protocol for displaying the Jalur Gemilang while being mindful of errors that AI-generated content could produce.

“We encourage everyone to learn the correct way to fly the Jalur Gemilang and to be careful when using AI to generate content so that there are no mistakes or omissions. This is very important,” he told a press conference after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2026 celebrations on Sunday (July 19).

Fahmi said the ministry would also work with the Malaysian Press Institute and the Malaysian Media Council to ensure that any AI-generated representation of the Jalur Gemilang published during National Month is accurate.

Asked whether action would be taken against those who produced inaccurate AI-generated images of the Jalur Gemilang, or fly the flag incorrectly, Fahmi said the government’s initial approach would be to advise those responsible to correct the mistakes.

“If the errors are not rectified, we will then consider the appropriate follow-up action. But we will begin by providing advice,” he said.

He also encouraged Malaysians from all walks of life to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, villages and government premises from now until at least Sept 16 as part of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign.

Besides the campaign, he said the ministry would organise the “Jelajah Jiwa Merdeka” roadshow, with details of its programmes to be made available on the Merdeka 360 website.

Fahmi said he hoped the National Month celebrations would not only mark the beginning of the annual observance but also strengthen patriotism and remind Malaysians of their responsibility to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, preserve unity and secure its future.
