Tupai replaces Musang as king in Pahang

AS Musang King prices dip in Pahang, another premium variety called Tupai King is stealing the spotlight there, fetching up to RM120 per kg with the season’s first harvest already fully sold, Kosmo! reported.

Durian orchard owner Chin Wai Kian, 46, said the only Tupai King tree currently bearing fruit at his orchard in Kampung Rengai took 10 years to produce its first harvest.

“The tree started dropping its fruits this week, producing about 50 durians, and some had already been reserved by my regular customers. This is the tree’s first harvest this year. Although I have cloned more than 100 Tupai King trees, only the original tree has started bearing fruit, while the rest are still growing,” he said.

Chin said most of his customers are avid durian gastronomers from Lipis, Kuantan and Gua Musang, Kelantan.

He said Tupai King durians are is priced between RM90 and RM120 per kg, depending on their grade and the age of the tree.
