Viral video links delivery rider to alleged RM10,000 theft

PETALING JAYA: A delivery rider’s alleged attempt to steal cash from a wallet backfired after a video of the incident went viral on social media, leading to his arrest.

In the video, a Chinese national claimed she lost a wallet containing RM10,000 in cash while at a supermarket in Semenyih.

The woman later met a man who claimed to have found and returned the empty wallet. However, the man denied taking the cash, which was then reported missing.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed that police received a report on the incident at 9.37pm on Wednesday (June 17).

He said the incident was believed to have occurred at about 3pm at a supermarket in Semenyih, with a seven-minute and 11-second video related to the case detected circulating on TikTok.

“Following investigations, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Kajang district police headquarters arrested a 37-year-old man at 1am on Thursday (June 18).

“The suspect, who works as a delivery rider, has been remanded for four days to assist in investigations,” he said in a statement on Friday (June 19).

ACP Naazron said the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building.

He also urged those with information related to crime to contact the emergency hotline at 999 or the Kajang district police headquarters control centre at 03-8911 4243.
