Gold mining tragedy in Jeli leaves pregnant mother of four widowed

JELI: A man whose wife is about to deliver their fifth child died after being buried in a landslide.

Mohamad Ali Akhbar, 38, was buried in a two-metre high landslide believed to have occurred during gold mining activities at a creek in the Jerimbong oil palm plantation vicinity.

According to Sinar Harian, the deceased’s brother Mohd Zaki Ali Akhbar, 41, when met at the Jeli Hospital forensic unit here on Thursday, said his brother’s wife, who is eight months pregnant, burst into tears when she heard the tragic news.

Mohd Zaki said his brother’s wife Ummi Mastura Mohd Din, 30, was the one who had informed him of the tragedy.

"My sister-in-law is due to give birth this August and they have four children aged 12 to 2 years old. My brother was the third child out of seven siblings and worked odd jobs fertilising oil palm trees and tapping rubber," he said.

According to Mohd Zaki, the last time he spoke to Mohamad Ali was two weeks ago over a phone call.

Mohd Zaki, who lives in Kuantan, said Ummi Mastura had asked him to make the necessary arrangements for her husband’s burial. He added that Mohamad Ali’s remains would be buried in Kampung Bukit Jering here after the post-mortem was completed.
