Dual Undang claim sparks confusion in Sungei Ujong

PETALING JAYA: Just five days after Muhammad Faris Johari was named the 11th Undang Luak Sungei Ujong, another person has now been proclaimed for the same title, raising questions over who is actually the legitimate Undang.

Abd Rahman Limat (pic), 70, a former clerk, has been named Undang of Sungei Ujong to replace Datuk Mubarak Dohak, who has been stripped of the title.

The proclamation ceremony was held at Telapak Tua Kampung Chedang at 2.45pm yesterday, Sinar Harian reported.

According to the report, the proclamation was agreed upon by the Ibu Soko, Buapak and Tiang Balai Perut Waris Hulu.

However, no official statement has been issued to announce Abd Rahman’s appointment.

The report also said it is understood that Abd Rahman, whose highest education level is the lower certificate of education (LCE), is from the Biduanda Waris Klana clan.

His position within the lineage is Datuk Juan Waris Perut in Hulu Luak Sungei Ujong.

Abd Rahman is said to be among those who had previously submitted his name as a candidate for the position of Datuk Klana Petra Undang Luak Sungei Ujong on Nov 13, 2004.

On May 5, Muhammad Faris, who is Waris Klana Hulu, was named Undang of Sungei Ujong.

An announcement on the appointment was made by Waris Nan Tua Klana Hulu Orang Kaya Datuk Laksamana Shaharumzaman Abdul Malek, Ibu Soko-Ibu Soko Klana Hulu and waris-waris Klana Hulu.

They claimed the ceremony took place at Telaga Undang on April 22 and was witnessed by Ibu Soko Waris Negeri, Waris Negeri, Datuk Lembaga Lingkungan, To’Buapak Lingkungan and state officials.

They said the appointment was carried out without any interference from external parties and in accordance with Article 14(1) of the Negri Sembilan State Constitution.

Muhammad Faris, 29, an accountant, is the second child of Johari Ngah and Ibo Soko Klana Hulu Shazlina Sinda Maharaja Abd Karim.

Mubarak was removed as the Undang of Sungei Ujong on May 13, 2025, due to offences related to traditions and customary laws of Negri Sembilan.

However, he claimed his removal was not valid and has filed an originating summons at the High Court to challenge it.

The state has four Undang who hold influential positions in the state’s Adat Perpatih system.

This includes the authority to elect the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.

The three other ruling chiefs are the Undang of Jelebu, Undang of Johol and Undang of Rembau.

Known as the Undang Yang Empat, the four chieftains made headlines when they called for the removal of Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir on April 19.
