Ten cats killed after fire breaks out at Simpang Pulai animal shelter

IPOH: About 10 cats were killed after a fire broke out at an animal shelter in Simpang Pulai.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said they received a call about the incident at 5.20pm Thursday (April 23).

"About 80% of the premises was destroyed. We believe that there were 50 cats there and 10 have died," he said in a statement.

The shelter is said to be Noah's Ark Ipoh (NAI).

When contacted, NAI founder Dr Ranjit Kaur Mendhir said a number of cats and one dog at the premises have gone missing.

"Some of the cats are being treated while some have been fostered," she said.

Ricky Soong, the president of Ipoh Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals, whose own shelter is just beside NAI's, said the incident is believed to have occurred at about 5pm.

"I had just left ISPCA's shelter after feeding the dogs when my staff called me about the fire.

"I called NAI's members and rushed back to help rescue the cats with my staff," he said, adding that ISPCA's shelter was not affected.
