38-year-old dies in restaurant

MELAKA: A 38-year-old assistant technician died after collapsing while dining at a 24-hour restaurant in Bukit Katil here.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the deceased was identified as Muhammad Arif Mohamed Rabei, who is believed to have fainted while eating at around 3.20pm on Friday.

“Initial investigations found that the victim was having his meal at the premises before getting up from his seat and suddenly collapsing,” he said yesterday.

He said police received information on the incident at 3.35pm, with patrons at the restaurant calling for medical assistance.

“A medical assistant from Hospital Melaka, who arrived at the scene shortly after, confirmed that the victim had passed away,” he added.

Based on information provided by the deceased’s younger sister, he said the deceased had complained of stomach pain on March 25 and sought treatment at a clinic.

He added the sister said her brother did not have any known underlying health conditions.

Based on the post-mortem report, he said cardiac tamponade, or compression of the heart, was the cause of death.
