Three family members killed in Dungun crash after attending relative’s wedding

DUNGUN: Police have identified the three family members killed when the sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in crashed at KM59 of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor near Felda Jerangau yesterday.

Dungun police chief Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir said the victims were the SUV driver, Nurul Hafizah Shaary, 39, her 13-year-old son Muhammad Redzuan Arash Mohamad Redzuan, and her four-year-old daughter Nur Radya Athalia.

"Meanwhile, two of her other children, Nur Raesha Amanda, 14, and Nur Rakhis Aral Yn, nine, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Dungun Hospital for further treatment,” she said in a statement on Tuesday (March 24).

Supt Maizura added that at the time of the 6pm accident, Nurul Hafizah, an agent for a water and air filtration company, was travelling from Jerangau to Ajil, Hulu Terengganu with her four children.

She said the accident is believed to have occurred when the SUV driver lost control upon reaching the scene, veered into the opposite lane, struck a water pipe, and crashed into an electricity pole on the right side of the road.

She added that the bodies of the three victims were taken to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu for post-mortem examinations.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” she said.

Meanwhile, Nurul Hafizah’s younger brother, Mohd Saddam, 33, said the accident happened as she was returning to Ajil after attending their youngest sibling’s wedding here yesterday.

He said his sister had appeared cheerful and warm at the event, even sharing light-hearted moments with family members.

"I am deeply shocked and devastated to learn that my sister and her two children were killed in the accident just hours after we were together,” he said when contacted. - Bernama
