Dungun crash victim had last joyful moment with youngest child before tragedy

KUALA TERENGGANU: Nurul Hafizah Shaary, 39, who was killed along with her two children in a road accident on Monday (March 23) after attending her youngest sibling’s wedding, had earlier shared a joyful moment celebrating her youngest child’s birthday.

Her nephew, Mohd Tarmizi Said, 42, said Nurul Hafizah had held a birthday party on the night before the incident for her daughter, Nur Radya Athalia Mohamad Redzuan, 4, who also perished in the accident.

The police officer said his aunt appeared happy and cheerful, as relatives from near and far had gathered to celebrate Aidilfitri and the wedding together.

"We’ve been close since childhood as we grew up together. She was also the one who kept encouraging me during my police training.

"There was nothing unusual about my aunt that night. She was cheerful as always...Her youngest child shares the same birthday as me, so we celebrated together the night before the incident,” he said when met at the Forensic Department of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital near here on Tuesday (March 24).

According to Tarmizi, Nurul Hafizah’s husband Mohamad Redzuan, 40, an ambulance driver at the Kuala Dungun Health Clinic, is still in shock and struggling to cope after losing his wife and two children in a tragic road accident.

He said that Mohamad Redzuan also had to take care of two other children, Nur Raesha Amanda, 14, and Nur Rakhis Aral Yn, 9, who are still receiving treatment at Dungun Hospital.

"My late aunt’s husband had just arrived home in Ajil, Hulu Terengganu, from Jerangau, Dungun, when we heard the news. He had to get home early to go to work.

"At around 6pm yesterday, my aunt’s husband called me, and I rushed to Jerangau Health Clinic to see their youngest child, who was badly injured. I held her, and she died in my arms,” he said.

Tarmizi said that Nur Rakhis Aral Yn was now in stable condition and was expected to be discharged today, while her sister, Nur Raesha Amanda, would be transferred to Kemaman Hospital for surgery on her broken thigh.

He said that the remains, including those of another child of the victim, Muhammad Redzuan Arash, 13, had undergone post-mortem and were expected to be laid to rest at the Sungai Tong Muslim Cemetery in Setiu after Asar prayers.

On Monday, Bernama reported that three family members died when the sport utility vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in crashed at KM59 of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor near Felda Jerangau in Dungun.

Nurul Hafizah and Muhammad Redzuan Arash were pronounced dead at the scene, while Nur Radhya Athalia succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at Jerangau Health Clinic.- Bernama
