Duo charged with trafficking over 3 tonnes of drugs


KUALA LUMPUR: Two men have been charged in the Magistrate's Court here with two counts of trafficking more than 3,000kg of drugs earlier this month.

Chew Weng Han, 38, and Liang Kar Jun, 44, a transporter, nodded after the charges were read out before Magistrate MS Arunjothy on Monday (March 16), but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

They were charged with two counts of trafficking methamphetamine weighing 3,320.69kg in 3,205 transparent plastic bags, and ecstasy weighing 1.438kg in four transparent plastic bags, at a premises in Taman Gembira here at 7.35pm on March 2.

The charge, under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B (2), provides for the death penalty, or life imprisonment and up to 15 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

The accused were not allowed bail and the court set June 16 for mention for the submission of the chemist's report. – Bernama
