‘Feel good’ factor due to strong economy

KUALA LUMPUR: Recent encouraging economic indicators and strengthening of the ringgit have led to a renewed “feel good factor” and boost of confidence among Malaysians, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic).

The Umno president said the positive developments serve as a catalyst for the people to remain united and to continue supporting the government’s aspirations to build stronger national unity.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, added that economic stability is crucial in sustaining harmony in a multiracial society like Malaysia.

“When we are part of the unity government, we must preserve this spirit of harmony, and this diversity must be upheld collectively to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful.

“With sound economic growth and an improving exchange rate, the people will continue to unite in supporting the government’s aspirations,” he said when speaking at the Umno breaking of fast event here yesterday.

Also present at the event were MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and other party leaders.

Ahmad Zahid said the holy Ramadan month serves as a time for Muslims to improve their acts of worship, strengthen their charitable deeds and cultivate discipline through fasting.

“In the context of Malaysia as a multiracial and multi-religious nation with a unique diversity, gatherings such as this represent a true manifestation of harmony and mutual respect.

“These are the values that we must continue to uphold and emulate,” he added.

Meanwhile, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the Umno supreme council agreed to postpone party elections scheduled for this year to a date not exceeding six months after the 16th General Election (GE16), in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution.

“This is to ensure that the entire party machinery at all levels is fully prepared to face the possibility of upcoming state elections and GE16, which may be called at any time this year,” he said.

In conjunction with Umno’s 80th anniversary celebration this year, the party will also organise the Bumiputra Education Congress on May 1, followed by the Umno convention as the highlight of the historic celebration on May 2 at Dewan Merdeka, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
