Kulai warehouse still ablaze after over 19 hours

KULAI: A rubber and plastics storage warehouse went up in flames on Tuesday (Feb 24) afternoon, with firefighters still battling to put out the fire more than 19 hours later.

Kulai fire station chief and operations commander Muhammad Fauzi Awang said the incident at Jalan Air Hitam, Senai was reported at 4.37pm.

"The warehouse was engulfed in flames when we arrived at the scene.

"Firefighting efforts are still ongoing to extinguish the remaining 35% of the fire using open water sources such as water from a river nearby as well as firefighting foam," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 25).

He said an aerial ladder platform was also used by the firemen.

He added that 39 firefighters, supported by 11 personnel from a shipbuilding and heavy engineering company, are involved in the operation.

"We have also deployed about 30 drums of firefighting foam from neighbouring states to help in our efforts," he said.

Two schools near the site, SJKC Kulai Besar and SJKC Sengkang, have been instructed by the district Education Office to close temporarily because of air pollution caused by the fire.
