Speaker rejects Ramkarpal's motion for debate on Azam Baki's shareholding issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has rejected Ramkarpal Singh's (PH-Bukit Jelutong) motion to debate allegations of Tan Sri Azam Baki’s shareholding in the august House.

"I would like to confirm that I have received the motion on Feb 12," Johari said in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Feb 23).

"I have looked into it and I understand that a special investigation committee has been set up to look into the matter. The special committee is chaired by the Attorney General."

Johari said, therefore, he rejected the motion to debate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner’s shareholding because the panel is probing the matter.

In his query on the status of the motion, Ramkarpal said that the committee is not a court of law and therefore, it should not be a hindrance for the House to discuss the matter.

He said the issue had grabbed headlines and warranted discussion.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar had previously said that the Special Investigation Committee convened on Thursday (Feb 19) to record Azam's explanation about the shares.
