KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim deflected questions about Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli’s call for the removal of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over allegations related to his shareholdings.
“There is no need to focus on other issues. Be patient, and let us not get distracted. It is better to focus on the unity of the people in conjunction with the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration,” he told reporters briefly after attending the MCA CNY celebration at Wisma MCA here on Tuesday (Feb 17).
Earlier in his speech, Anwar expressed hope that the Year of the Horse would bring economic growth and development for the people and the country.
It was previously reported that several MPs, including Datuk Seri Rafizi, Subang MP Wong Chen and former Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Setiawangsa MP, Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, were present at the Tangkap Azam Baki rally, which called for a probe into the country’s top graft buster.
In his speech, Rafizi urged coalition partners to take a clear stand on the issue, saying that their position could influence public opinion.
He also said they would return to the streets if an independent and transparent investigation into the issue was not carried out.
On Saturday (Feb 14), Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said a special committee led by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar had begun a probe into the matter.
