Ab Rauf steers Melaka bikers from ‘mat rempit’ to responsible riding

MELAKA: Long before assuming the state’s top office, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh had already shaped the aspirations of Melaka’s motorcycle enthusiasts by inspiring many to pursue responsible riding rather than the unsafe street-racing culture, said a superbiker.

The chairman of the Melaka chapter of the Superbikes Association of Malaysia (SAM).

Kapt Bersekutu (PA) Muhammad Suffian Ngoh Abdullah said the Melaka Chief Minister was widely regarded as a “guru” among riders, particularly during his earlier involvement with the association.

“When we were younger, many of us were drawn to becoming "Mat Rempit" but Ab Rauf consistently reminded us to think bigger and ride responsibly.

"He (Ab Rauf) encouraged us to save money, invest in superbikes and travel across the country, not merely for leisure, but to help promote local tourism," he said in an interview on Monday (Feb 9).

Muhammad Suffian noted that Ab Rauf’s commitment to the riding community dates back to his tenure as chairman of SAM Melaka, where he played a significant role in strengthening the association and guiding young enthusiasts toward safer, more purposeful riding.

"Today, we have 286 members, with riders from within and outside the state gathering at Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh here on Saturday (Feb 7) for a gala dinner.

“We deeply appreciate the guidance he gave us from the beginning, urging us not to become "Mat Rempit", but to be responsible citizens who ride to promote tourism, unity and peace,” he said.

Established about a decade ago, Muhammad Suffian said SAM Melaka has grown from a small group of enthusiasts into one of the historic city’s recognised motoring communities.

He said many members shared a common journey of disciplined saving to own their motorcycles and a commitment to safe riding practices.

"Beyond their passion for riding, members are also actively involved in charity initiatives and community engagement programmes, reflecting values shaped by years of positive mentorship," he added.
