Thunderstorms, heavy rain expected in Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across parts of Sarawak and Sabah as well as the Federal Territory of Labuan, effective until 10am on Thursday (Jan 29).

MetMalaysia, in a statement at 7am, said the severe weather is expected to affect Mukah (Mukah), Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu) and Miri (Subis) in Sarawak.

In Sabah, the warning covers Pantai Barat (Ranau and Kota Belud), Tawau (Lahad Datu), the entire Sandakan region and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
