Nostalgia won't work on voters anymore, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno must stop selling its past glories to the youth of today, and instead prove they can create a better future, says Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad, who is fondly known as Tok Mat, said the party must realise that some 50% of voters comprise those aged between 18-35.

Tok Mat added that these voters did not grow up during the glory days of Barisan Nasional.

“They did not have first-hand experience with Felda’s development in the 80s.

“They are the generation without any nostalgia and will not vote along party lines.

“My instruction tonight is clear - stop selling the past and start selling them a better future,” he said in his speech when officiating the Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings simultaneously on Wednesday (Jan 14) night.

Tok Mat further stressed that youths in the e-hailing sector feel no connection with Umno’s achievements some 40 years ago.

“They vote for the future. They express concerns over whether they have a sufficient salary and are able to buy homes.

“We must offer solutions,” he added.

He also urged the wings not to punish those with different opinions.

“Embrace them and show them how Umno is a party that is relevant, open and always ready to listen. We need creative disruption with the purpose of delivering big changes and using adaptive and innovative solutions,” he said.
