Contractor killed in explosion at private KL university, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: Police confirm that there has been one fatality after an explosion occurred at a private university here.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the deceased was a 24-year-old contractor who was working on an air conditioning unit.

"Four students were injured. Two foreign workers, who are canteen workers, suffered light injuries," he said in a statement on Monday (Jan 12).

Earlier, authorities received a call regarding the explosion at 11.40am on the fourth floor of the university building involving an air-conditioning compressor located in the maintenance next to the cafeteria.

Comm Fadil said there were not many students at the area at the time of the explosion as many are on holiday.

He also said that the police and the Fire and Rescue Department conducted inspections to mitigate the risk of a secondary explosion.

"The fire department has confirmed that the area is safe and investigations are still ongoing," he said.
