IPOH: A married couple in their late 60s escaped death after their car caught fire following a collision on the North–South Expressway near Ipoh on Thursday morning (Jan 1).
Perak Fire and Rescue Department acting deputy director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said the incident occurred at about 8.20am at KM264.6 northbound, after the Ipoh toll plaza.
He said the couple's car was involved in a collision with another vehicle before catching fire.
“The two victims, aged around 68, sustained injuries.
“They had received initial treatment from medical personnel who arrived earlier. The other vehicle involved had been towed away,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Shazlean said firemen from the Meru Raya station arrived at the scene at 8.28am and found the car about 80% engulfed in fire.
He said the blaze was brought under control within five minutes and fully extinguished by 9.25am.
A total of six firefighters and one Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT) were deployed in the operation.
