SEREMBAN: An individual suspected of setting off an improvised explosive device (IED) at Desa Palma, Nilai, has been detained.
Negri Sembilan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad (pic) said the 63-year-old man was arrested in Mantin yesterday.
“Yes, the man has been arrested and sent to hospital due to injuries sustained. A statement will be issued soon regarding the arrest,” he said when contacted, Bernama reported.
On Friday, DCP Alzafny said the suspect is believed to have technical knowledge and special skills in making explosives based on the discovery of devices and equipment at the man’s rented house.
Among the items seized were explosive devices, flammable cleaning agents and carbon as well as sulphur elements.
Also found were another 31 IEDs in his house, all of which were destroyed by the police.
DCP Alzafny said the Bomb Disposal Unit found that the IEDs had an explosion radius of 20m, while the fragments could reach as far as 30m.
“The suspect has knowledge in the field of chemistry and had worked in a pharmaceutical factory for three years, as well as knowledge in the field of information technology (IT).
“Based on assessment, the explosives were in perfect condition, in terms of the preparation of the materials and devices used, including timers and sensors. The activity is believed to have been carried out in the past six months.
“The fragments used were nails and a folding knife that were finely shredded.
“Looking at the preparation works, we interpret that he had the knowledge to create the perfect explosive,” he said.
According to DCP Alzafny, the suspect is categorised as very dangerous.
He would don a face mask or hat, in addition to wearing a wig to avoid being recognised when he was out in public.
“Interrogation of a witness found that the suspect avoided people and was aggressive. He had separated from his wife, children and family more than 30 years ago and had a history of hitting his girlfriend,” he said.
On Dec 22, police found suspected IEDs after receiving a report from the public that there was an explosion and nails scattered in Desa Palma at 7.08am.
