Man caught shipping RM1.27mil of cannabis

JOHOR BARU: A 21-year-old man’s attempt to ship over RM1.27mil worth of cannabis buds to the United Kingdom was thwarted by the Customs Department.

The youth, who works at a forwarding company, declared the parcels as curtains on the courier form, said Johor Customs director Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi (pic).

“Our officers intercepted the two parcels that were posted through a courier service centre in Senai on Nov 26.

“Inspections on the two parcels revealed 24 packages of cannabis buds weighing 13.04kg bound for the United Kingdom,” he said in a press conference at the department’s headquarters yesterday.

In a separate case, Aminul Izmeer said a 23-year-old Philippines national was detained for distributing 135g of cannabis buds via a courier service.

“The parcel, declared as towels, was traced to its receiving address at an apartment on Nov 19.

“That was where the suspect, a factory worker, was detained,” he said, adding that the parcel contained five small plastic packages of cannabis buds worth RM14,112.

Aminul Izmeer said the two cases were not linked and the suspects were charged separately at the Kulai and Johor Baru courts. Both suspects are awaiting trial.

The cases are being investigated under Section 6 and Section 39(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug possession.
