Tahfiz student dies in Pekan crash

KUANTAN: A tahfiz student was killed after the vehicle he was driving collided with a lorry carrying palm oil at KM60 of Jalan Pekan-Rompin near Kampung Merchong on Saturday (Dec 13).

Pekan police chief Supt Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the accident occurred at about 11pm, resulting in the death of Muhammad Fakhri Waqiuddin Basri, 22, from Indera Mahkota here, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said initial investigations found that the accident occurred while the victim was travelling from Pekan towards Rompin, while the lorry was driven by a 28-year-old man from Rompin heading to Pekan.

"At the scene of the accident, the car driven by the victim is believed to have lost control and veered into the opposite lane before colliding with the lorry," he said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 14).

Mohd Zaidi added that the student's body was taken to Pekan Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while the lorry driver was uninjured.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department said five personnel from the Nenasi Fire and Rescue station were deployed to extricate the trapped victim before Health Ministry personnel later confirmed the student's death.

It is understood that Muhammad Fakhri Waqiuddin was attending the Syahadah Al-Quran programme at the Maahad Tahfiz Negeri Pahang. – Bernama
