Three teens grab e-hailing driver's phone in Skudai

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested three teenagers for their suspected involvement in the robbery of an e-hailing driver and a theft case.

Johor Baru North acting OCPD Supt Azrol Anuar Nor said the three teenagers, aged between 15 and 17 were detained around the Skudai area at about 3.15pm on Tuesday (Dec 9).

“The 47-year-old man lodged a report at 9.18am on Monday (Dec 8), claiming he was robbed by three local males who had boarded his vehicle.

“The incident occurred at 7.30am while the victim was sending them home,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 10).

He added that when the victim arrived at a housing area in Skudai, the suspects asked him to show a QR code, claiming they wanted to make payment via the Touch ‘n Go application.

“As the victim handed over his phone to show the QR code, the suspects grabbed the phone and fled.

“The victim tried to chase after them but slipped and sustained minor injuries,” he said.

Supt Azrol Anuar said none of the three suspects had prior criminal records, and they tested negative for drugs.

“They will be remanded for further investigation under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

“They are also being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine or both,” he said.

He advised the public to avoid engaging in criminal activities and to abide by the law.
