No rush to inform EC on Lamag vacancy, says Sabah Speaker

KOTA KINABALU: There is no rush to inform the Election Commission (EC) about matters relating to the Lamag seat vacancy, says Sabah State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Kadzim M. Yahya.

He said he is currently focused on preparations for the swearing-in ceremony and the state budget sitting.

When asked when he would notify the EC, he said there was no urgency at this stage.

“No rush, at the moment preoccupied preparing for swearing-in and budget sitting,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (Dec 9).

He is expected to inform the EC after all related assembly matters are concluded to ensure the smooth administration of the House is not disrupted.

Under legislative procedures, the EC will determine the next steps once it is formally informed of a vacancy.

Lamag was won by Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin in the Nov 29 state election.

He passed away on Dec 5 before taking his oath of office as an assemblyman, and the seat has not been formally declared vacant pending notification to the EC by the Speaker.
