Mah: Stand together and seize turning point

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA members must close ranks and seize the opportunity presented by an emerging political “turning point”, says party deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (pic).

Speaking at the third general assembly of the 30th MCA central delegates, Dr Mah highlighted recent developments – including the Sabah election – as evidence of rising dissatisfaction with Pakatan Harapan among Chinese voters.

He warned that MCA must remain united and prepared if that “wave” reaches the peninsula.

“In politics, big changes often come at a turning point. This wave may be the major change we have been waiting for,” he said, adding that the party needed political awareness, the right skills and the courage to fight if it hoped to “stand in the surf” rather than be swept aside.

Dr Mah emphasised that MCA must “clearly differentiate itself” from its rivals.

He contrasted this with the party’s enduring character, shaped by the courage and broad vision of its founding president, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, who championed cross-ethnic cooperation and peaceful nation-building during a turbulent and divided era.

Each year before the assembly, Dr Mah noted, party leaders gather at Tun Tan Cheng Lock’s memorial at the lobby of the MCA headquarters, symbolising a political culture distinct from other parties.

“Our party character is defined by Tun Tan Cheng Lock’s spirit. That is how we must define ourselves.”

He also suggested creating a “Tan Cheng Lock Spirit Award” to help the wider Chinese community better understand MCA’s history, values and contributions.

“Tun Tan Cheng Lock’s courage to go against the tide and his inclusive vision in a turbulent era shaped MCA’s historic role.

“In today’s equally unsettled political climate, we must once again show that spirit – the spirit of MCA. Our party character defines who we are,” he added.
