PETALING JAYA: Persistent rainfall has caused river levels in several states to reach warning and danger levels, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain vigilant.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) reminded the public to exercise caution near rivers, especially during continuous rain.

“I want to remind everyone to always be cautious with the river levels in your area. If you are near a river, avoid high-risk areas,” he said in a social media post.

He said according to the latest data from the Irrigation and Drainage Department, 15 rivers are currently at warning levels while 20 have reached danger levels yesterday.

The affected states include Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Terengganu and Kelantan.

“Always stay alert to weather developments, steer clear of strong currents, and follow authorities’ instructions from time to time,” reminded Ahmad Zahid.

The water that had reached danger levels, included Timah Tasoh Dam and Sungai Perlis in Kampung Sungai Bakau (Perlis), Sungai Bata in Kampung Pahana (Kedah), Sungai Slim in Slim River (Perak), Sungai Muar in Kampung Londah (Negri Sembilan), Sungai Cheng (Melaka), Sungai Kesang in Telok Rimba and Sungai Lenik in Ladang Chaah (Johor) as well as Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang (Kelantan).

Also at danger levels were rivers in Kampung Asahan, Pintu Air Ijok, Bukit Changgang and Pekan Meru in Selangor.

The waters at warning levels were Sungai Anak Bukit in Taman Aman and Sungai Baru in Kampung Sungai Baru (Kedah), Sungai Melaka in Durian Tunggal and the Pump House in Telok Rimba (Melaka), Sungai Muar in Kampung Awat and Sungai Tangkak in Kampung Seri Ma’amor (Johor), Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai (Kelantan) as well as the rivers at Rantau Panjang, Parit Mahang and Jambatan SKC in Selangor.

In TERENGGANU, two stretches of Sungai Nerus in Kampung Bukit, Sungai Kemaman at House Pump Paya Paman, Sungai Tebak at Jambatan Tebak, Sungai Dungun in Kuala Jengai, Sungai Marang at Jambatan Pengkalan Berangan, Sungai Paka in Kampung Luit and Kampung Langkap were at danger levels as of 4pm yesterday.

Sungai Nerus in Kampung Jeram, Sungai Dungun at Jambatan Jerangau, Sungai Setiu at Jambatan Permaisuri, Sungai Besut stretches at Jambatan Keruak and Kampung Kuala Ping were at warning levels.
