Teacher gets 10 years' jail and caning for sexually assaulting student

JERTIH: A teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and six strokes of the cane for committing physical sexual assault on a 15-year-old male student.

Sessions judge Ahmad Fadhli Mahmud meted out the sentence on Anuar Yusoff, 48, here on Tuesday (Nov 4) after finding him guilty of the offence.

Anuar was charged with three counts of physical sexual assault and was sentenced to 10 years in prison with two strokes of the cane on each count, with the jail terms to be served concurrently from today.

"The court also orders the accused to undergo counselling during his imprisonment and to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing his prison sentence,” the judge added.

In delivering his judgment, Ahmad Fadhli said that after examining the evidence and arguments presented by the defence and prosecution, the court found that the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt in the case and that its case was a mere denial.

"Taking into account that the accused is a teacher who should protect the victim, and not take advantage of the victim to indulge his lust, especially when the victim is of the same sex.

"However, the accused betrayed the trust given to him by committing sexual acts on the victim and such acts have left the victim traumatised,” he said.

Anuar faced three counts of committing physical sexual assault on the boy in a room at a resort on Pulau Perhentian at 3pm on July 29, 2022 and 1am and 5am the following day.

The charge was brought under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for up to 20 years' jail and caning upon conviction. – Bernama
