Penang cops seize RM3.4mil worth of drugs, cripple drug syndicate with arrest of seven

GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a drug syndicate with the arrest of seven individuals, including two foreign women, and seizing methylenedioxy-N-hydroxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA) worth RM3.4mil.

State police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said the suspects were arrested at two different location in George Town and Seberang Jaya during an operation conducted by a police team from George Town and the Central Seberang Perai Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department on Oct 30 between 4pm to 3am on the following day.

"In the first and second raid at a parking area in George Town, police detained a man and a foreign woman," he said.

Comm Azizee said guided by the suspects, police confiscated more than 200 plastic packets of various colours containing drugs believed to be MDMA in a house at George Town.

He said among the confiscated items were 22 plastic packets of various colours containing powder believed to be MDMA weighing about 755.9g, 213 plastic packets of various colours containing powders believed to be MDMA weighing about 5,523g and a transparent plastic packet containing powders weighing about 17.5g.

He said following further investigations and information gathering, a follow-up raid was conducted at a house in Seberang Jaya where police detained four men and a foreign woman.

"During the raid police, confiscated three red-capped plastic containers filled with powder suspected to be MDMA-type drugs, weighing about 2,660 grams and 12 plastic packages containing 438 transparent packets, each filled with powder suspected to be MDMA-type drugs, weighing about 14,530g," he said.

Comm Azizee said intelligence gathered revealed that the syndicate has been actively involved in drug distribution activities since the middle of this year.

"Urine screening tests found that one suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, while three others tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, and ketamine," he said, adding that further checks found that three of the suspects had criminal records, with prior crime and drug-related offences.

Comm Azizee said police seized two vehicles from the suspects during the raid.

"The suspects has been remanded for seven days from Oct 31 until Nov 6," he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Acts 1952.
