PUTRAJAYA: Labour productivity recorded positive growth across most states in 2024 with six states surpassing the national growth of 2.4%, according to the Labour Productivity by State, 2024 report released by the Statistics Department (DOSM) on Thursday (Oct 30).
The six states were Pahang, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Selangor and Sarawak.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said Malaysia's labour productivity rose by 2.4%in 2024, recording value added per employment of RM99,265 per person (2023: 0.7%; RM96,914 per person) as the country's economy grew by 5.1% in 2024 (2023: 3.5%).
"Meanwhile, total employment increased to 16.6 million persons, indicating year-on-year growth of 2.6% in 2024 (2023: 16.2 million; 2.8%)," he said in a statement the same day.
He added that most states recorded encouraging growth in 2024, with six states outpacing the national growth rate, led by Pahang with an expansion of 4.9% (2023: 2.8%), followed by Johor at 4.3% (2023: 2.1%), Kuala Lumpur at 3% (2023: 0.8%), Melaka at 2.8% (2023: 0.8%), Selangor at 2.8% (2023: 1.9%) and Sarawak at 2.7% (2023: -1.2%).
In terms of sectoral performance, the construction sector led overall growth with a strong increase of 16.4% in 2024, followed by the manufacturing sector (2.6%), agriculture (2.2%), services (1.8%) and the mining and quarrying sector (0.7%).
Mohd Uzir said that with sustainable labour market conditions and a stable economy, Malaysia's labour productivity remains on track for a resilient and positive outlook despite ongoing challenges in labour market reforms and global economic uncertainties.
"Continued investment in skills development, particularly through workforce training and education, digital transformation, communications and data analytics, will be key to sustaining improvements in labour efficiency across Malaysian states," he added. - Bernama
