Jobless man gets seven years for stabbing cousin over rejected love

MELAKA: A jobless man who stabbed his cousin after she rejected his love was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court.

Muhammad Hidayat Burhan, 25, was sentenced after pleading guilty before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah on Thursday (Oct 30).

According to the charge, the unmarried accused stabbed the 18-year-old victim with a knife along Jalan Tangga Batu, in front of Taman Tangga Batu in Melaka Tengah, at about 4.05pm on October 20.

He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 10 years’ jail and a fine, or up to 20 years if injury is caused.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fiqri Hakim Zamri prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.

Earlier reports said a factory worker in Tangga Batu suffered a wound to her waist after being slashed by an unknown man.

The victim, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle ridden by her sister in law, suddenly felt pain in her back and later discovered the injury.

Investigations later revealed the assault was driven by unrequited love, and the suspect was arrested several hours after the incident.
