Early morning fire destroys three ferries in Langkawi

ALOR SETAR: Three ferries docked at a pier in Langkawi were destroyed in a fire early Tuesday (Oct 28) morning.

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Zone 4 chief, Fire Supt Mohd Zamri Abdul Ghani, said they received a call about the incident at 2.29am.

"Upon arrival at the location, it was found that three ferries were fully engulfed in flames. Four ferries were docked at the pier and were in close proximity," he said.

According to Mohd Zamri, the Bahagia 99 ferry was 90 per cent destroyed, the Coral Island ferry was nearly 70 per cent destroyed, while the Bahagia 8 ferry suffered 10 per cent damage on the left side. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The firefighting operation involved personnel from the Persiaran Putra, Langkawi, and Padang Matsirat Fire and Rescue Stations. The team carried out the extinguishing efforts using water from fire hydrants, assisted by water tankers and one foam line.

Another ferry that was nearby was unaffected by the fire and was towed out of the area for safety. - Bernama
