Two tourists drown off Pantai Cenang in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: A holiday trip turned tragic for a group of tourists when two men drowned while swimming at Pantai Cenang in Pulau Langkawi on Wednesday (Oct 22).

The victims, identified as R. Nurenthiran, 38, and M. Suresh, 46, both from Selangor, were believed to have been swept away by strong currents while bathing at the popular beach at about 5.30pm.

Langkawi deputy police chief Supt Samsulmuddin Sulaiman said police received an emergency call about the incident at 6.05pm.

“Both victims were rescued by members of the public using a jet ski and brought to shore before being taken to Hospital Sultanah Maliha (HSM) for treatment.

"However, they were pronounced dead by medical officers at the emergency department," he said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims had come to the island for a family vacation and were swimming at the public beach area when the incident occurred.

The case has been classified as sudden death (SDR).
