Landslide forces major road closure in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Motorists here narrowly escaped serious injuries or worse when a hillslope tumbled onto a hillside road heading to Balik Pulau town in torrential rain.

The major landslide along Jalan Tun Sardon, the main route linking Balik Pulau and Relau, has forced the road to be closed.

The landslide sent large boulders and fallen trees crashing onto the road, blocking both lanes at about 4.45pm on Thursday (Oct 23).

Dashcam footage circulating online showed part of the cliff giving way as vehicles passed below.

Rescue teams and relevant authorities have been deployed to the scene to assess the situation and begin clearing works.

At press time, no casualties have been reported as the extent of the damage is being determined.
