Two policemen plead not guilty to extortion


BALING: Two policemen pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here on Tuesday (Oct 21) to charges of extortion.

Lance Corporal Sharif Abu Hurairah Abu Bakar, 24, and Constable Mohammad Nashrul Alif Alahuddin, 28, made the plea before judge Rohaida Ishak.

They were jointly charged with putting a man in fear of injury by extorting RM200 from the victim at the side of Jalan Parit Panjang, Kampung Asam Jawa, Mukim Pulai here at 7.38pm last Sept 19.

The charge, framed under Section 385 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same law, provides a maximum jail sentence of seven years or a fine or whipping or any of the punishments if convicted.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Amirul Halimi Md Salleh, while both accused were represented by lawyer S. Shathish.

The two policemen were allowed bail of RM3,000 with one surety each and the case was set for mention on Nov 27. - Bernama
