Chemical spill causes breathing issues for 23

IPOH: A chemical spill at a manufacturing factory in Tanjong Malim has caused 23 people to suffer breathing difficulties and eye irritation, according to the police.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department acting assistant director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said a distress call was received at 12.42pm yesterday.

He said the spill was caused by a leak in the factory’s pipe system.

“The spill is estimated to involve about 15 litres of chemical substance,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The victims were taken to a nearby clinic before the firefighters arrived, he said.

“The station chief contacted the hazardous materials team for advice and cleaning procedures,” Shazlean added.

He said the pipe leak was successfully sealed and the spill was contained using sand.
