Flash floods claim two lives in Tongod

TONGOD: Two people were killed after flash floods struck Kampung Bangkulut Imbak Timbangan Evogold Sdn Bhd here.

Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue station chief Hairi Otuh said the victims were a seven-year-old boy and a 79-year-old Indonesian woman.

He said they received an emergency call at 9.46pm on Thursday (Oct 2) and only arrived at the scene located 169km away at about 3am on Friday (Oct 3).

It is believed a sudden water surge triggered the flash flood.

"The two victims were swept away while attempting to cross a flooded road in an attempt to get to higher ground to escape the surging waters.

"The boy was lost after slipping from his mother's grip, while the elderly woman lost her balance while crossing," he said on Friday.

Hairi said the operation concluded at 5.04am, adding that no residents were evacuated as floodwaters had receded. – Bernama
