Negri JPJ issues 22 summonses to motorists misusing NSE emergency lane over weekend

SEREMBAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued summonses to 22 motorists for using the emergency lane along the North South Expressway stretch here over the weekend.

State JPJ director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said another 26 motorists were caught on camera for using these lanes and they would be summoned for an explanation.

"In total, we detected 48 offences during the operation where 22 motorists were issued with summonses on the spot.

"The offenders will be slapped with a RM300 compound," he said, adding that the operation was held on Sept 20 and 21.

Hanif said these road users failed to understand that emergency lanes were strictly meant for departments that provided emergency services such as ambulances, fire and rescue and police vehicles or for vehicles facing engine problems.

"I can only describe those who use these lanes especially during traffic congestion as impatient.

"They need to know that driving along the emergency lane was a serious offence as provided under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 as you are among others, obstructing emergency vehicles to reach their destinations," he said.

He said those who use the emergency lane also posed a high risk to other motorists as they could cause a collision anytime.

"They can crash into motorcycles or vehicles which have broken down," he said.

He advised motorists to always adhere to road traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.
