Proudly wave the Jalur Gemilang in solidarity on National Day, Zahid urges

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians were urged on Saturday (Aug 30) to proudly wave the Jalur Gemilang in celebration of the nation's 68th National Day, reinforcing the spirit of unity and brotherhood among one another.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasised that the country's independence, achieved and preserved until today, can only be safeguarded by a united, harmonious, and respectful society.

"This is the true strength of Malaysia, a nation built upon the values of unity and the sacrifices of its people.

"Therefore, this year's celebration of independence is also a tribute to all Malaysians who remain steadfast in protecting and defending the beloved homeland we share," he said in a Facebook post in conjunction with the 68th National Day on Sunday (Aug 31).

Ahmad Zahid noted that this year's National Day theme, "Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni", serves as a reminder that genuine independence is not merely defined by freedom from colonial rule, but by the extent to which the people are cared for, heard, and their well-being protected.

As the Rural and Regional Development Minister, he also remarked that Aug 31 remains a pivotal moment in history, forever marked by the echoes of the "Merdeka!" declaration at the Merdeka Stadium in 1957, followed by the formation of Malaysia in 1963.

"It stands as a powerful reminder that a nation once colonised can rise with dignity, strength, and confidence," he said. – Bernama
