Cops probing six cases of upside-down flags, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of six cases of flags being displayed upside down are currently being investigated by the police.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed this, saying that the legal process had already begun.

"Two are in Johor, two in Penang, one in Selangor and one in Negri Sembilan. The legal process has begun and we have already suggested to the Attorney General's Chambers that further action be taken.

"We act based on the law and as police, we are enforcers of the law. As many are aware in the past there have been plenty of cases that are outside our control such as flag burning and stepping on flags. So the laws are made so that these do not occur within our population as the flag is an entity that must be respected.

"We will not hesitate to investigate such cases," he said on Friday (Aug 22).

A slew of cases involving flags being displayed upside down have caused outrage among Malaysians.

A dental clinic in Pontian got into trouble after it was found displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down, while a similar case in hardware store in Kepala Batas showing the Jalur Gemilang being raised upside-down lead to condemnation including from Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
