Woman detained for spreading fake news on Zara

KUALA LUMPUR: A 39-year-old woman was detained in Rawang for spreading fake news regarding the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the suspect was detained in Rawang last week.

"There was a fake news which claimed the victim was put into a washing machine.

"We detained the suspect. The case is being investigated under the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act," he told reporters on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Comm Kumar said the case is among 15 investigation papers opened for fake news in connection with Zara's death.

"We have to take stern action on fake news as it could disrupt public order and the investigation process," he added.
